Doc/Coding tips

When can you use consultation codes?
Posted: January 14, 2010

Medicare no longer reimburses for consultation codes and you’ll see most other 3rd parties follow suit. In the rare case that a payor accepts the codes, there are five (99241-99245) which are based on the same components as other E/M codes for office visits: history, physical exam, and medical decision making.

The medical record should contain a letter from the referring provider. You must also send a letter back to the referring provider explaining what you found and what you recommend.
