You have the ability to start an encounter without an appointment and we call this starting an encounter ‘on the fly’. First, open the patient’s file and then open ‘Exam History’. Next, click the ‘Create Encounter’ button in the bottom right corner. A window will be displayed asking you to choose the encounter details.

To start an encounter without an appointment, open the patient file; open “Exam History”; click “Create Encounter” – that will let you start an encounter without an associated appointment. This is often used for “phone consults” that the Dr. may have with a patient.
