MIPS Data Reporting Series: Performance Period Selection
Posted: December 12, 2018

Remember full calendar year reporting periods in Meaningful Use?  We don’t either.  The reality is that the last time 365-day periods existed was in 2013 and each year since has required a period of “any 90 consecutive days”.  The 2018 participation year of MIPS allows for varying lengths of performance periods depending on the performance category:

Promoting Interoperability: at least 90 consecutive days

Quality: full calendar year

Improvement Activities: at least 90 consecutive days

Cost: full calendar year

The 90 day periods can be approached differently and that provides you with a good deal of flexibility.  As an example, if you wanted to use the 2nd quarter of the year for Promoting Interoperability and then the 4th quarter for Improvement Activities, you can do that.

How do you ultimately decide on your performance periods for each category?  It’s hard to give a single answer as the decision could be based on your goals, your performance during specific periods of time, etc.  But RevolutionEHR’s MIPS scorecards for Promoting Interoperability and Quality offer you a way to analyze your data over various periods of time and assist in your decision-making process.  For those who would prefer a partner in the analytics and decision-making department, the RevAspire service is ready to help.
